Dan Kennedy Hated Social Media, But I Listened Anyway

So Dan Kennedy? More on that in a sec. First a story about loser-do and being broke.

There are a lot more fun ways to be broke than working all of the time. And that is exactly what I did. I was broke and worked all. Of. The. Time.

I was basically a hamster in a wheel. I would be struggling, our cash would go low, I would go out and hustle, go to more networking events, follow up with people, call, and rack my brain for how I could bring in the next client.

Constantly, my bank account was in the negative. So much so that it’s what I relied on to make my business work. I would wake up every single night at 3:00 in the morning when that bank account rolled over, knowing that I was looking to see which check had bounced, and what had gone wrong the night before.

Until one day when I was forced to change. I had a baby, my daughter Bella, and for the first time in 10 years of my business I was taking some time off. When she was only a week old and I needed to be home with her, something big happened. Unfortunately (later I would learn fortunately), it was then that I got a letter from the bank telling me that they weren’t going to cover my overdrafts anymore. This crazy pants method I had relied on for years of working myself to death and running my bank account into the negative wasn’t going to cut it.

So what was I going to do? Cry? Crumble? Go bankrupt?

At this point, most people would retreat. But I’m guessing that you’re like me, because you’re reading a post about success and you seek more.

I knew there was more. I knew there had to be a better way, so I didn’t crumble. I did what a woman of faith would do. I prayed. I prayed for something different to come into my life so I would not keep doing the same thing over and over again, because the results weren’t what I wanted.

It was then that a friend gave me a book. It was Dan Kennedy’s No B.S. Direct Response Marketing book. It blew my mind. It blew away everything I knew. For the first time, I discovered that marketing could equal results.

I, who had been wishing and struggling for so long, could finally control my future. I didn’t have to keep wishing that something would change. I could actually make the change happen.

The problem was the guy who wrote this book, Dan Kennedy, HATED social media. And that’s the thing that I knew and the channel I worked in.

What was I going to do? I wasn’t going to keep doing what I had been, because it wasn’t working. I had to find something different.

I started studying other direct response marketers. I began to study everything that I could about direct response marketing. How could I take what I knew about social media and combine it with marketing that produces measurable results and create a system that would take away the guesswork of my future, create a system that would generate income on demand and allow me to control my success moving forward and not just hope for something different to happen?

I experimented. I put those direct response marketing practices into place and applied them to what I knew about social media. And it worked. I stopped having to spend money to get clients. I stopped having to spend money to grow my business.

I hate when people say, “It takes money to make money.” We’ve all heard that, but how are you supposed to spend money when you don’t have any? I sure didn’t.

Finally, I found a way to grow my business without spending money on it. In fact, I was able to discover a way to even generate income while I was growing my business.

In one year of putting this system into place my company grew our revenue 327%. I went from literally hawking my engagement ring in order to make payroll, because I had made a commitment to my team that I would do whatever I had to do from the very beginning to take care of them, to now having a multi-million dollar agency. Because this system works.

I eventually got to meet that guy, Dan Kennedy. Not only did I become a student of his, but we got to know each other. He was really impressed with how I had taken the direct response marketing tactics he taught and applied them to social media—and produced a memorable ROI. He started letting me work with some of his clients and I am now his official social media marketing vendor, having worked on all of Dan’s book launches and with many of his top private clients.

Amazingly, he even asked me to coauthor a book with him. (My response, “um, yeah!”) I’m the proud co-author of The No B.S. Guide to Direct Response Social Media Marketing. It’s an Amazon bestselling book and it’s his bestselling book now of all time. I also recently came out with The Ultimate Guide to Instagram for Business, also bestselling, and have helped many authors launch in the same way using the same exact tactics I’m going to show you today.

We can control what happens next. We can control how our business grows. We attract how much revenue we make and what our company looks like. We can take what I’m going to show you today and you can use it to turn your business into one that you love, that you are proud of, and that is producing what you are meant to have.

I’ve had the pleasure of working with incredible companies now, which bring me in to monetize their marketing. The top information marketers and online marketers in the world, from Dan Kennedy to Robin Robins, to Ron LeGrand, to Dave Dee, these folks are all individuals that me and my team get to work with every day.

We don’t spend money on marketing anymore.

But the biggest blessing of my life is that I get to have a life now. I can vacation with my family, which includes my husband Ian (aka The Tall One), and my two daughters Bella, now 7, and Katie, almost 5.

I can spend my time with my passions instead of worrying about where my next profit is coming from. I’m very involved in my church—I actually sing in a Praise Band. And one of my passion projects is Operation Homefront, supporting our military families when their loved ones are serving abroad. I am blessed to be married to a Marine, so this is really important to me. And I can do that now without worrying where our next client is coming from.
